Local dojo commended on sportsmanship at national championships

Local karatekas face-off with opponents from across the country at Full Contact Martial Arts (FCMA) National Championships.

Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy took to the Kempton Park Indoor Sports Centre for a challenging two-day Full Contact Martial Arts (FCMA) National Championships recently.

A total of 440 karatekas from across the country participated in the tournament.

The athletes performed in front of South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) representatives, such as Barry Hendricks, the vice-president of SASCOC and president of the Gauteng Sports Confederation, and Yaseen Lombard, secretary-general of the Gauteng Sports Confederation.

Preceding the event, kanchu Alex Tebbutt put his students through intense training in anticipation of the tough competition.

“We participated in every division on the day and performed well in traditional kata, musical weapons, full continuous kumite, points fighting and continuous fighting,” said Tebbutt.

“The training leading up to the tournament proved worth it in the end.”

Beyond their exceptional performance, sportsmanship and determination, athletes from the dojo took home 68 medals on the day.

“Thank you to the hosts, Sajida Mahomed (FCMA president) and shihan Aslam Mahomed, for giving us the platform to showcase our skills,” said Tebbutt.

The dojo is currently in preparation for a belt grading session set to take place next Saturday.
