Poker Run helps local club raise funds

Victoria Lake Athletics Club hosted their annual Poker Run to raise funds to have their club gazebo branded.

While many community members were still tuck up in bed, 15 runners from the Victoria Lake Athletics Club were up and ready for the club’s annual Poker Run.

The approximately 10km run kicked off and ended at the Victoria Lake Club and allowed the club, which describes itself as a passionate running club with the perfect mix of experienced and novice runners, a chance to raise funds in a fun way.

The run made its way through the streets of Germiston, and at the end, runners played poker for an hour with cards they have collected along the route.

The winning hand won a prize basket with prizes sponsored by VLC, Mike’s Kitchen, DJL Hair Studio, Germiston Golf Club, Lambton Spar, Angel Paws, Deebar Mining and Greenways Pharmacy.

Money raised from the event will be used to brand the club’s gazebo that goes up at most races.

“The club has such awesome branding we’d love to have that on our gazebo,” said club treasurer Michelle Marillier before the start of the race.

Victoria Lake Athletics Club members show off their club branding before beginning their fund-raising Poker Run.
