Eagles suffer Directors League loss

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club continued their Easterns Cricket League campaign with an away match against Kempton Park Cricket Club.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club continued their Easterns Cricket League campaign this weekend.

The club had Sunday Promotion League, Saturday Third League and Sunday Directors League matches scheduled for the weekend.

However, the club only played their Directors League match against Kempton Park Cricket Club, as the other matches were called off.

The Saturday Third League match was cancelled by the Easterns Cricket League and the Sunday Promotion League was called off after the pitch at the Germiston City Sports Club was allegedly sabotaged.

“It is believed people took the covers off the pitch during the night and opened the sprinkler system, making the pitch unplayable,” explained Martiens Grobler, on behalf of the club.

“Both the Eagles and Germiston City Cricket Club are appealing to the public to respect the fields and to keep off the fields, especially over weekends.

“This is not just for the clubs’ benefit but also for the community.”

In the Sunday Directors League the Eagles travelled to Kempton Park to face Kempton Park Cricket Club.

“It really has been an up-and-down season for the Directors League team and, sadly, this weekend was one of the down times,” said Grobler.

The home team batted first and set an impressive total of 288 runs, all out, in their 50 allotted overs.

The day’s top bowlers were Johan van Greunen with four wickets in 10 overs for 46 runs, Darren van Tonder with one wicket in 10 overs for 40 runs and Theuns Herbst with one wicket in nine overs for 35 runs.

“While the teams had lunch the pitch seemed to have time to change,” said Grobler.

“One ball would be rolling, while the next ball would take the batsman’s head off.

“No one was prepared for this.”

The Eagles were bowled out for only 54 runs, in their 50 allotted overs, giving Kempton a 234-run victory.
