The year that was saw an abundance of sport taking to the fields, pitches, courts, water and tracks of Germiston.
The GCN takes a look back at some of the sporting highlights from 2018.
January:
• The second in the three-part Trinity Sports triathlon and duathlon series took to Germiston Lake and the surrounding streets seeing athletes of all levels competing.
• Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club started the year off with a bang by winning their first game of the second half of the season.
February:
• Raptors Wrestling Club hosted the South African Continental Championships training camp.
• Diamond Athletics Club chats to the GCN about the club and the training they offer.
• Paddlers tackle the Victoria Lake Canoe Club’s annual night race and have a ball.
• Tyron Stevens, a member of Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy, appeals for sponsorship to attend the US Open ISKA World Martial Arts Championships in Orlando, Florida.
March:
• Local EFC fighter Pietie ‘Thunder’ Coxen was set to take on Tresor Boluwa in EFC 61.
• Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club soars in local derby beating Germiston City Cricket Club in the Executive League match.
• Luso Africa FC and Germiston City Football Club play to 3-3 draw in a derby match at Hattingh Park.
• Elsburg Rugby Club kicks off their season with a win against Heidelberg Rugby Club.
• Hockey superstar Gareth Heyns headed to the Commonwealth Games with the SA national hockey team.
April:
• Luso Africa FC powers to the top of the ELFA Super League log with a win against Linhill Celtic Football Club.
• Runners took to the streets of the city in the annual Alan Robb Race hosted by Germiston Callies Harriers.
• Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club clinches the Easterns Cricket League’s Promotion League title.
• The third and final leg of the Trinity Sports triathlon and duathlon took place at Germiston Lake.
May:
• Top yearlings go under the hammer at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale held at Bloodstock South Africa’s sales complex in Gosforth Park.
• EFC fighter Pietie ‘Thunder’ Coxen wins his EFC 68 fight against HP van Staden.
• The 100 Cycle Challenge whizzed through the streets of Germiston and surrounding areas, kicking off at Germiston Lake.
• The Victoria Lake Junior Rowing Club is growing from strength to strength.
June:
• Paddlers competed in the Victoria Lake Canoe Club’s Flat Race.
• Luso Africa FC remains top of the log by beating Benoni Northerns 5-2.
• Germiston Callies Harriers runner Bheki Hlatshwayo wins silver at the Comrades Marathon.
• Germiston Simmer Rugby Club suffers defeat at the hands of Diggers Rugby Club.
July:
• The Victoria Lake Parkrun celebrates its 100th run.
• Germiston City FC had a hard match against Sporting FC but ultimately came out the victors.
• Raptors Wrestling Club hosted a youth training camp.
• Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy celebrates two world champions.
August:
• Elsburg Rugby Club victorious in tough match against East Rand Police Rugby Club.
• Rugby league action was heading to Germiston’s playing fields.
• Germiston City FC books a semi-final sport in the league cup.
• Kaydence and Tyrel Smith show off their motocross prowess.
• Luso Africa FC retains their league log number one status after winning against Sporting FC.

• The Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni Triathlon takes to the water of Germiston Lake and streets of the city.
November:
• The annual Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle Race was a great success raising funds for charity and attracting top cyclists.
• The Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile took to the track raising funds for local charities.
• Athletes descended on Germiston Stadium for a Central Gauteng Athletics league event.
• The 2018 Ekurhuleni Basketball League (EBL) Championships were held at Germiston Stadium.
• Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club defeat Germiston City Cricket Club in a Sunday Promotion League derby.
December:
• Germiston Stadium is utilised by a number of top athletics coaches.
• Primrose Sports Academy hosted the Primrose Soccer Tournament for young players in the area.
• Cassandra Le Roux is a force to be reckoned with in the world of MMA.
