Cricket action galore in local derby

It was a bat-breaking match as the local derby between Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club and Germiston City Cricket Club went into full swing at the Dinwiddie Main Oval.

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club and Germiston City Cricket Club swung into action on Sunday, for the latest Sunday Promotion League fixture.

The local derby took place at the Elsburg Eagles Main Oval in Dinwiddie.

The hot early morning weather was no match for the Eagles who set a fiery target of 221 runs for six wickets in their 50 overs.

The top batsmen for the Eagles were Jeandre Schultz with 39 runs and Renier Wiesener who knocked up 44 runs and even managed to break his bat while in action adding to the heat of the game.

When their opponents came into bat, they only managed to knock 112 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs.

A local derby between Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club and Germiston City Cricket Club took place at the Elsburg Eagles Main Oval in Dinwiddie on Sunday, where the two teams battled to secure a win in their latest Sunday Promotion League fixture.

This gave the Eagles, not only the bragging rights of being the better team of the two in the derby but a 109-run victory.

Wesley Lowe with was the top bowler for the Eagles with six wickets in nine overs for 37 runs.

In the Sunday Directors League, the Eagles faced Benoni Northerns Cricket Club at the Elspark Sports Complex.

The sun, which was shining brightly when the teams took to the pitch, was soon behind grey clouds which sent heavy rain down on the field, ultimately causing the umpire to call off the match as the field was unplayable after the rain.

One of the Eagles’ top batsmen, Jeandre Schultz is well positioned to chip the ball away.

However, before the recess prompted by the weather, Benoni batted first and were able to set a target of 157 runs in their 50 overs.

Trailing by 157 runs, the Eagles could only accumulate 20 runs for no wickets in two overs, when they came into bat before the downpour.

The top batsmen for the Eagles were Pieter Nel with 10 runs not out and Martiens Grobler with 10 runs not out.
