Aaron leaps into the future

Pedro Aaron shares his success as a junior athlete and plans for the future as a senior athlete.

Germiston Callies Harriers athlete and resident Pedro Aaron has celebrated a successful career as a junior athlete.

Aaron, who is coached by Stephané Kotzé, has focused mainly on long jump in his junior athletics career and has managed to clinch several titles over the years including five South African titles, an African Junior Championship title, Athletics South Africa (ASA) titles and three school titles, to name a few.

Now, with all these accomplishments under his belt, he is ready to begin his career as a senior athlete.

“I turn 20 in February so I will start the New Year as a senior athlete,” Aaron explained when he was interviewed by the GCN on Thursday.

“My first competition will be the Central Gauteng Athletics track and field meeting on January 12.”

Though the year will be Aaron’s first official year as a senior athlete, he has previously competed in the senior division.

In April, he competed at the ASA’s u-18 Youth and u-20 Junior Championships, held at the Dal Josaphat Stadium in Paarl.

During the three-day championships, which were interspersed with rain disruptions, as well as warm weather conditions, Aaron showed that he is a force to be reckoned with when he competed in and won the u-20 long jump event.

He won the 7.42m jump event, which he felt he could have improved on.

“My main goal as I become a senior athlete is to jump 8m,” he said with a smile.

When asked if anything would change in his training, Aaron commented, “My training will not change too much but I will train harder and push myself more.”

Aaron trains four days a week, namely Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. He is in the gym daily to improve his fitness and stamina.

“It would be a dream come true to be named one of the top five senior athletes next year,” Aaron said.

“I am really looking forward to the challenge.”
