Locals rake in the medals

Local athletes confidently competed in various sporting codes challenging a number of athletic clubs from across Gauteng.

Athletes from across Gauteng once again took to Germiston Stadium to compete in the Central Gauteng Athletics 2018/2019 field and track event on Saturday.

A mix of nervous and confident athletes took to the track and fields while chanting spectators sang encouraging songs to show support for their favourites.

Local clubs, namely Germiston Callies Harriers and Diamond Athletics were spotted doing well at the event.

Germiston Callies scooped up medals in both track and field events.

Anne Bornman secured gold in the girls’ u-11 long jump event, and Zander Benade jumped in third place in the boys’ u-11.

Lanzelle van Antwerpen landed in second place in the girls’ u-13 long jump with a 5m leap.

In the girls’ u-11 high jump event, Luanne du Plooy came in first with a 1.23m jump.

Competing in the girls’ u-11 age group in track events, du Plooy came second in the 80m race, fourth in the 100m and third in the 75m hurdles.

In the boys’ u-7 60m and 80m races, Lucas du Plooy came in fourth place.

Brandon Redgard came in second place in the boys’ u-11 70m hurdles.

Jade Adams competed in the girls’ u-15 hurdles where she scooped up the gold medal and the silver in the 200m sprint.

Sinead Meyer took the bronze in the girls’ u-15 100m, and in the girls’ u-15 300m hurdles Ninke Otto took the bronze.

Janco de Lange came first in the boys’ u-15 discus, but due to the combining of the u-14 and u-15 categories he ended in third place overall.

In shot put he came in third place.

In the discus girls’ u-15, Anzelle Du Toit ended in third place, however, in the overall results combining the u-14 and u-15 categories she was pushed to fifth place overall. She had the same results in the shot put event.

Neo Mothae from Palmridge Athletics Club came in third place in the boys’ u-11 1 200m long-distance race.

Diamond Athletics confidently took to the podium to scoop up medals too.

The club’s star-athlete Kabelo Mampane took silver in the boys’ u-15 100m hurdles.

Liam Naicker competed in the boys’ u-13 200m hurdles where he came in second.

Steven Sabino ran in the boys’ u-13 80m hurdles race where he secured a silver medal.

In the 100m sprint, Ndumiso Simelane came in second place (boys’ u-15), Ompile Rathebe finished in first place (boys’ u-13), and Selena Rocha came in first place (girls’ u-11 race).

Rathebe returned to the track for the boys’ u-13 200m sprint where he took second place followed by fellow club mate, Naicker who came in third.

In the field events, Rocha landed in second place in girls’ u-11 long jump and Sabino took first place in the boys’ u-13 long jump.

“We had an awesome day in the sun dominating in most events,” said John Diamond, a coach at Diamond Athletics Club.

“We had a record of 10 medals.

“It might be more as some results were delayed at the closing of the event.

“I am proud of my athletes, who are heading to Potchefstroom on November 24, to compete in the Inter-Provincial Championships.”
