Mixed bag of results for Thunder MMA

Several Thunder MMA fighters competed in the Extreme Fighting Championships in Weltevreden Park last Saturday.

Elsburg-based Thunder MMA’s amateur fighting team competed in the Extreme Fighting Championships last Saturday.

The team, made up of Chris le Roux, Tylor Louw, Dylan Gibble, Eric van Rooyen, Martin Meyer and Clint Louw, travelled to Weltevreden Park to take part in the event.

Meyer, relaxed and composed, was the first to enter the hexagon.

Despite sticking to his game plan and giving it his all he was defeated.

Gibble was next up, and was able to last all three rounds in his debut fight, leaving the decision of who would win the match to the judges.

Sadly the judgement didn’t go his way and he was defeated.

Tylor Louw came out guns blazing in his match.

The high-paced match quickly saw the fighters fall to the floor where Louw set up a deep arm bar on his opponent, however, this wasn’t enough and he was picked up and slammed into the mat and assaulted with punches before the match was stopped by the referee, and his opponent declared the winner.

Clint Louw followed his brother into the hexagon and after three gruelling rounds he was declared the winner on points.

On the event’s main fight card, le Roux was the first to enter the hexagon.

The nail-biting, hair-raising match which kept supporters and spectators on the edge of their seats, ended in an upset when the referee stopped the match declaring le Roux’s opponent the winner.

“We believe the fight was stopped prematurely and this left a lot of people upset.

“We plan to question the decision,” said Thunder MMA head coach Pietie Coxen.

Van Rooyen was the last fighter from Thunder MMA to enter the hexagon.

Van Rooyen, who began competing in 2012 but has been out of action for a while, was eager to showcase his newly evolved fighting style paired with his experience in the hexagon, and was rewarded with a victory in the final seconds of the match, via submission from an arm bar.

“We are extremely proud of everyone who competed, and showcased their talent, without them the sport would be empty,” said Coxen.
