Watch: Albemarle sisters reach for the stars

Albemarle boasts young aerialnastix stars.

They are talented, full of the joys of life and ready to further their careers in aerialnastix.

Miandi (6) and Abigail (8) Griezel from Albemarle recently received Junior SA aerialnastix colours for all their disciplines.

The pair competed in the Ekurhuleni Games 2018 (regionals) recently with Abigail taking one first and two second places and Miandi taking two first places.

Their performances earned them a spot in the SA Aerialnastix Championships on October 13.

The girls excelled at the competition with Abigail taking a first, second and third place and Miandi taking a first and second place.

Abigail competes in floor, trampoline and bench while Miandi competed in floor and bench.

She will start doing trampoline when she gets a bit older.

“Both girls have been doing aerialnastix for about two years.

“Abigail started when she was in Grade R, at Kewpie Crèche,” said Melissa, the girls’ mother.

“The club, Alberton Twisters Club, would come to the school to teach the children, so when she went into Grade One at Laerskool President Steyn, I started her full time at the club.”

Now in Grade Two, this was the second time Abigail had qualified to compete in the SA Aerialnastix Championships.

She took a third place in the competition.

When Abigail started at the club, Miandi joined her and she started competing this year.

“I enjoy doing aerialnastix.

“It is fun and I do well in it,” Abigail said.

Miandi echoed her sister’s sentiments and said, “I enjoy it as it is fun, it is lovely and I can do it very well.”

The girls competed in three competitions this year, including regionals and nationals.

They train four days a week and Melissa said that Abigail is extremely dedicated.

“My husband Peter and I support them 100 per cent and will continue to do so as long as they want to compete,” Melissa said.

She added that Abigail wants to be a Springbok gymnast in the future.

The siblings both compete in eisteddfod and Abigail loves to sing in the school’s choir.

“At school, I love reading the most,” said Abigail.

Miandi said she likes painting the best.

“When I’m at home I like to play with my pretend camera, phone, driver’s licence, keys, lipstick and make-up,” said Miandi.

“I like to play with my dolls,” Abigail said.

They also enjoy playing with their brother Rylan (22 months).

Melissa added that they keep a good balance between sport, school and their personal lives.

The girls are excited to continue their aerialnastix and compete in more competitions.
