Successful track and field meet for local clubs

The highly anticipated Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) 2018/2019 track and field event kicked off its first league meeting at the Germiston Stadium.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) held its first league event of the 2018/2019 track and field season last Saturday.

Held at Germiston Stadium, the meeting hosted a number of athletes, their clubs and highly-spirited spectators.

Local athletics clubs Diamond Athletics Club and Germiston Callies Harriers were among the clubs taking part, and they generated pleasing results.

All the way from Krugersdorp, Ruzel Geldenhuys (girls’ u-15) of Monnas Athletics Club serves javelin action at the Central Gauteng Athletics 2018/2019 track and field meet last Saturday.

Germiston Callies performed well in the field events.

Kairo Klaasen came in first in the boys’ u-11 long jump with a 4.29m leap and managed a silver in the boys’ u-11 80m race.

Fellow club mate in the same age group Zander Benade took the silver in the long jump.

Andrea Laubscher came in second in the girls’ u-13 long jump, Luc van Rhyn came in second in the boys’ u-15 long jump, and Bernhardt du Plessis managed the same spot in the boys’ u-17 long jump event.

Armant van der Linden landed in first place in the girls’ u-15 javelin.

Monique Pretorius secured third place in the girls’ u-15 high jump.

Ninke Otto came in second place in the girls’ u-15 400m.

Carla Hattingh won both her 200m and 400m races in the junior women’s events.

The senior men’s 800m race saw Ryno van Vollenhoven (middle) in the lead, Godfrey Mothapo in second place (left) and Kgabo Mmethi in third place.

In the 65 to 69 years age group, Hendry Smook and Manda Smook, both took silver in the 5 000m walk.

Diamond Athletics Club pushed for great results in both track and field events with their youngsters earning bragging rights too.

Ethan Gunther competed in the boys’ u-5 60m race and came in second, while Tiara Rocha ran in the girls’ u-6 60m race, also coming in second.

Rafael Rocha competed in the boys’ u-9 60m and 80m races in which he came second in both.

Selena Rocha participated in the girls’ u-11 60m and 80m races where she came second in both.

The following athletes from Diamond Athletics Club managed a first place in their respective age groups, in the long jump event: Christopher Runnels (boys’ u-9), Kwanda Mathoneli (girls’ u-9), Steven Sabino (boys’ u-12) and Angelique van Niekerk (girls’ u-17).

Rharhang Motebang headlined the boys’ u-13 100m hurdles.

Luvo Menehevu landed in second place in the boys’ u-17 long jump.

In the track events, Liam Naicker came first in both the boys’ u-13 200m hurdles and 200m sprint.

Thabiso Mafa came in first in the boys’ u-15 200m.

Kabelo Mampane secured first place in the boys’ u-15 100m hurdles.

The u-17s represented the club well in their respective track events.

Sandile Bukhali came in second in the boys’ 200m and Sanele Tolbadi came first in the same race and first in the 100m.

Nikiwe Mongwe ran in the girls’ 200m where she came in first and managed second place in the 100m race.

Twelve-year-old Kelly Frazier from Sunward Athletics Club competed against her seniors in the girls’ u-13 long jump event last Saturday in the Central Gauteng Athletics 2018/2019 track and field meeting.

In the masters division, Abraham Kalyani took first place in the 100m, 200m and 400m races.

The CGA track and field league will return to Germiston Stadium on October 6 for the second league event, where local clubs will once again seek to grab a few more titles.
