Meet Elspark’s young and determined dirt bikers

Eslpark siblings Tyrel and Kaydence Smith share their passion for motocross.

Motocross is a form of motorcycle racing, done on an off-road circuit.

The sport originates from motorcycle trials competitions held in the United Kingdom and is now celebrated and enjoyed across the globe.

The Smith siblings, Kaydence (10) and Tyrel (6) from Elspark are two local motocross enthusiasts with a passion for the sport.

Despite their age, both are serious competitors, with Kaydence competing on her Husky 50 and Tyrel on his Husky 50 and PW 50.

Tyrel, who was hooked from the moment he started riding his Strider bike when he was just 18 months old, has made a name for himself on the track in the last two years.

“I won second place in the 2017 Sandbox Series on my PW 50 and I’m currently leading the standings for the 2018 Sandbox Series.

“I also came first in MXSA Moto Kids 2017,” he said.

His sister took to the track soon after her brother started competing.

“I was always passionate about motocross but I decided to start racing when I saw how much fun my brother was having on his bike.

“This is my second year competing and though I haven’t won any titles yet I came sixth in the 2017 Sandbox Series and second in MXSA Moto Kids,” Kaydence said.

When asked what they love most about motocross Kaydence said, “The best part about motocross is that I get to learn so much about speed and my own limits.

“I really think all girls should give the sport a try. I always have the best time on my bike.”

While Tyrel thinks the best part about motocross is all the amazing people he gets to meet and race against.

The pair, who are not part of a club, are currently competing in the Sandbox Series and Inland Series, and are hoping to find sponsorship which will help them reach their goals in the sport.

“I hope to one day go to America and compete alongside the amazing riders I see on TV.

“Motocross is in my blood and I never want to stop racing,” said Tyrel.

Kaydence hopes to one day become one of the top women in motocross.

“I am working very hard to become faster and better with each race.

“I know I will always ride motorbikes,” she said.

It was recently announced that the siblings had been selected as part of the Gauteng Riders who are set to compete in a motocross event in Bloemfontein.
