Busy week for Germiston, with a win and a loss

Germiston City Football Club had a mixed bag of results in their weekly Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League fixtures.

It was a busy week for Germiston City Football Club, with an away cup match, on Thursday, and a home league match, on Saturday, both as part of the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League.

The club first travelled to Alberton to face Alberton Football Club, in the quarter-finals of the Super League cup.

Though Germiston started the stronger of the two sides, they soon unravelled after an early attempt at goal hit the Alberton posts.

This was followed by two further attempts at goal by the visitors, each saved by the home team’s goalkeeper.

A lack of discipline by Germiston allowed Alberton to sneak in a goal and put them ahead, a lead they maintained heading into half-time.

The break seemed to allow Germiston time to regain their composure and discipline and they took command of the game, outplaying the home side and being rewarded with an equalising goal in the 70th minute of the match.

Though the team kept the pressure on the Alberton defence and goalkeeper, a winning goal eluded them until extra time.

During the final moments of the match the constant pressure paid off, after a well-taken corner sent the ball sailing across the Alberton goal to be met by Comfort Molebela, who put it into the back of the net.

This meant the team secured their place in the cup semi-finals with a 2-1 victory.

Germiston then played host to Bedfordview-based Olympia Football Club, at the Germiston City Sports Club, in their scheduled Super League fixture on Saturday.

Fresh from their cup match win, the team continued their momentum and took the lead in the first 10 minutes of the match.

The team continued to apply pressure and were rewarded with a second goal moments before the half-time whistle, after a fumble by Olympia’s goalkeeper.

“The home side came on after half-time with a certain swagger that did them no favours,” said Peter Oliver, club chairperson.

“Within seven minutes of the second half Olympia had clawed their way back into the game with two early goals.”

The Germiston side was shell-shocked and took a while to regroup.

During the heated second half an Olympia player was sent off the field, for foul language, but even this did not help the home team.

Germiston were unable to capitalise on the man down and squandered many an opportunity.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw.

In the reserve team’s matches they lost 0-2 to Old Benonians Football Club on Thursday, knocking them out of the cup, and won on Saturday against Olympia 3-1.

The club will next face Randburg Football Club in the Super League in an away match, this Saturday.
