Vital win for Simmer

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club celebrates win in Pirates Grand Challenge.

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club took on the Soweto-based Jabulani Rugby Club in the Pirates Grand Challenge, last Friday.

The match held at the Germiston Stadium was a must-win for the Germiston-based club and the nerves were clearly visible.

“Despite the nerves, captain Charl Wright calmed his troops down and they were ready to take on the visiting team,” said club chairperson Rene Audier.

Jabulani began the match, sticking to their tried and tested game plan, where they attempt to get under their opponent’s skin.

This, however, did not work and the Simmer boys held their cool and soon Wright had a hand in Juan Westenberg’s try.

Simmer continued to dominate the match in the scrums.

“A tight five, working hard together, and giving the backline good ball to play was instrumental in the success of the match,” said Audier.

Westenberg added another try to his tally and Eben Barnard also added his name to the score sheet.

Jason Harrison closed the game off with a try of his own.

“This meant the team celebrated a nice 29-7 bonus point win for the club,” said Audier.

Simmer’s u-21 team celebrated a win against their Jabulani counterparts, helping to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
