A weekend of wins for Germiston

After a humiliating defeat to Boksburg Football Club the previous week, Germiston City Football Club wanted to show that they were still a good football team and capable of beating most sides.

Germiston City Football Club and Sporting Football Club displayed an impeccable show of competitive football on Saturday.

The two teams clashed in an Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League fixture at the Germiston City Sports Grounds.

Germiston kicked the game off well with an early goal in the third minute by Comfort Molobela.

Two minutes later they went further ahead with a goal by Scotty Chando.

However, their celebration was short-lived as Sporting’s counter-attack put them on the scoreboard.

Germiston displayed great flair but that was not enough to generate more goals before half-time.

Coach Sreten Pavlovic had some stern words for his team during the break.

At the start of the second half, Germiston was scattered and their defence was challenged in the 48th minute when Sporting equalised.

The home side then saw themselves on the back foot after middle fielder Alex Njosa was sent off for a double yellow card.

Germiston was left with 10 men to see out the final 35 minutes of the game.

Coach Pavlovic was forced to ring some tactical changes, to boost a flagging midfield.

Furthermore, realising their advantage, Sporting continued to pressure the 10 Germiston men, but their defence was unbreakable.

In the 75th minute, Mduduzi Xulu latched onto a free ball in the Sporting box and sealed the winner for Germiston.

The 3-2 win boosted Germiston’s confidence in the league.

The reserve side made it a good weekend for Germiston with their second win in a row and beat the Sporting reserves 3-1.
