Race tests paddlers’ stamina and endurance

VLC paddler takes second in Vaal River Canoe Marathon.

Johannesburg Canoe Club hosted the two-day Vaal River Canoe Marathon last weekend for the 69th running of the Vaal River.

Due to the recent drought and being winter where water conservation is necessary, no water release was provided, and paddlers found themselves stuck on flat rocks from time to time.

However, there were still a few tricky rapids and huge waves in some sections adding to the excitement of the Vaal River Canoe Marathon.

The course on the first day was from the dam wall finishing 36km later in Three Rivers, on the Klip River.

Day two started below the barrage, at Cote de Val, and finished at Smilin’ Thru just before Parys, a distance of 34km.

The river was low, shallow, sluggish and resistant so it was very hard work and tiring, thus serving as excellent training for paddlers who wanted to improve their stamina and endurance for the long-distance races coming up on the canoeing calendar.

Loveday Zondi, a member of Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) based at Germiston Lake, was the second finisher of the epic endurance event of 70kms.

He finished in a time of five hours and 43 minutes over the two days.
