Mayor wishes metro’s Comrades team well

A team of athletes participating in the Comrades Marathon were given a great send-off by the metro’s mayor.

The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina has urged the 45-member athletics team to represent the metro well at the Comrades Marathon to be held on Sunday from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

The mayor was speaking during a farewell event he held for the team on Tuesday.

The team is led by the metro’s chief operations officer (COO) Lesiba Mojapelo who will run his debutante Comrades Marathon.

Mojapelo said participation in sports, such as running the Comrades Marathon, develops key values that are critical in the workplace such as time management and personal health.

Masina said he hoped that the team would grow in numbers and quality so that it could produce more champions who can assist other residents who aspire to be athletes.

“You have already reached a required level of physical fitness to participate in this race, and you can assist others through mentoring and coaching them to achieve their desire to participate in this prestigious marathon,” he said.

The metro is assisting its athletes to participate in the race in pursuit of its objective of fostering social cohesion and nation building through sports, arts and culture so that people can learn to live and work together.

“We can conquer the dividing lines that are always there in our society,” Masina said.

Papie Msimang is one of the metro’s officials who is participating in the Comrades Marathon.

He attributed the team’s resolve to participate and bring back medals to the support they have received from the metro and the mayor.
