Elsburg supporters cheer their team on to home victory

Elsburg Rugby Club hosted Eden Park Rugby Club in their Kestrel League fixture, on Saturday.

The chilly winter air did nothing to dampen the spirits of the Elsburg Rugby Club and Eden Park Rugby Club supporters on Saturday.

The clubs met in the Kestrel League, at Elsburg’s home grounds the Elspark Sports Complex, for what proved to be an explosive match – dominated by the home team.

Elsburg, hungry for league points, launched a fierce attack from the first whistle to the delight of the home crowd, putting 28 points on the scoreboard before the half-time whistle.

Despite their dominance, Eden Park spectators were left on the edge of their seats when a handling error from the home team saw an Eden Park player snatch the ball and run the full length of the field before he could be stopped.

This was, however, the only try the visitors were able to score as Elsburg doubled their efforts and were able to put another 19 points on the scoreboard giving them an impressive 42 point victory over their opponents, with the final score being 47-5.

Elsburg were thrilled with the results, feeling they were able to combine their dominance in the scrums and lineouts with the accuracy and speed from the backline allowing them to outplay and outsmart the opposition.

The match’s tries were scored by Gerrit Groenewald, Rudie Wessels, Juan Barnardt and Carel du Preez, with conversions made by Wessels.

The club will travel to Heidelberg this Saturday to face the Heidelberg Rugby Club.
