Three young wrestlers from the Elsburg Wrestling Club, which opened its doors more than 40 years ago, recently took part in the Brakpan Challenge.
The challenge is one of the elite tournaments on the Eastern Gauteng Wrestling calendar and sees competitors from elite clubs across the country – beyond the boundary lines of Eastern Gauteng – competing.

Ruan Zandberg, Byron Smith and Jesse van Baalen represented the club, supported by coaches Tobie Alberts, Hennie van Baalen and Johan Zandberg, team manager Santie van Baalen and club administrators Hannetjie Moodie and Ronel de Jager.
“Our three wrestlers had an outstanding day at the tournament,” said Alberts.
Results:
• Zandberg won a bronze medal.
• Van Baalen won a gold medal.
• Smith, who is the newly crowned national champion, won a gold medal.
“It was a day to remember with all of our wrestlers bringing home a medal.
“Every wrestler brings something special to the club, though we work towards a common goal, without the individuals there would be no club,” said Alberts.

The Elsburg Wrestling Club, located in Mare Street in Elsburg, is appealing to wrestlers from five years old and up to join the club.
The club trains every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm to 8pm.
“Wrestling, I believe, offers the youngsters a productive way to spend their time,” said Alberts.
