Pierre Coetzer headlines ERVBA meeting

East Rand Veterans Boxing Association (ERVBA) hosted former boxer and now boxing commentator Pierre Coetzer at their monthly meeting.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Pierre Coetzer made an appearance at the East Rand Veterans Boxing Association (ERVBA) monthly meeting on Wednesday.

ERVBA hosted their guest speaker at the Primrose Bowling Club where boxing enthusiasts and veteran boxers gathered to honour their esteemed guest.

Coetzer spoke about his career and how different boxing in South Africa has turned out.

“When I started boxing, we had three divisions. The World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation. Today there are a lot of divisions and titles,” said Coetzer.

The veteran who fought against global champions such as George Foreman, Riddick Bowe and Frank Bruno said his most memorable fight was when he faced his South African rival Johnny du Plooy in 1991.

Coetzer has since left the boxing ring, but he can now be found on the side as a commentator.

“We have been trying to set up a meeting with Pierre for over ten years, so this is a special moment for us.

“Thank you to all our guests and Jeff Ellis for taking time to be at our meeting,” said Jaap van Nieuwenhuizen, chairperson of ERVBA.
