Local athletes shine in championships

Talented young athletes shine at recent championships.

Christelle Grobler (16), from Solheim, and Clarissa le Roux (14), from Homestead, have done it again.

The pair of Central Gauteng Athletics athletes shone in the shot-put and discus events once again and qualified to represent Gauteng Schools at the National Championships and Vision Sports South Africa in Europe.

Grobler and le Roux qualified at the Gauteng Secondary Schools Athletics Championships to secure their place in the Gauteng Schools Nationals Championships, which were held in Pretoria in March, during which Grobler, a scholar at Kempton Park High School, and le Roux, a scholar at Leeuwenhof Akademie, took part in the shot-put and discus u-17 and u-15 age groups respectively.

This was Grobler’s seventh year and le Roux’s fifth year competing at a national level.

Having to compete in older age groups did not throw the girls off their game and both managed to secure podium positions in both shot-put and discus.

Christelle Grobler (16) gets ready for her shot-put throw during the Gauteng Schools Championships held in Pretoria recently.

Results from the championships:

• Le Roux was crowned as the u-15 Gauteng Schools champion in shot-put with a throw of 13.75m and received a silver medal for discus with a throw of over 37m.

• Grobler earned the silver medal in the u-17 shot-put with a distance of 15.30m and the bronze medal in discus with a throw of 40.89m.

Following the championship a list of the top performing athletes was released, in which Grobler was ranked sixth and le Roux 11th.

This was based on their outstanding performances in shot-put.

Coach Pieter Grobler is extremely proud of his athletes and commended them for their hard work and dedication.

“It is not easy to be a top athlete,” he said.

“An athlete has to be mentally, emotionally and physically prepared, with the most difficult part often being to make sure that you maintain a positive outlook no matter the result.

“They have to always believe in themselves.”

The girls will now begin to prepare for their trip to Europe as part of the team that will represent Vision Sports South Africa.
