Cue ball breaks ice in social pool

Social pool league welcomes all players and teams.

The Eastern Gauteng Eight-Ball Pool Association was formed in 1988 by Steve Sacks (formerly of Eastern Transvaal), where players were selected from clubs in Germiston, Alberton, Springs, Kempton Park, Edenvale and all areas in between.

Sacks chaired Easterns Pool for more than 10 years, is a past president of SA Pool, was a board member of the World Eight-ball Pool Federation (WEPF), as well as a past masters singles pool SA champion.

Thirteen years later he saw the potential for an Easterns Social Pool (ESP) league, as many players didn’t want to play in national championships, but would rather play competitively against other teams and clubs for fun.

Provincial league pool is also quite costly where social league fees are under R5 per player for a whole night’s league enjoyment.

Eastern Gauteng Pool is allowing five social league players (in each discipline), who do not currently play in the provincial league, to partake in their trials for selection to play in the SA Championships.

The ESP league is in its 34th season, with 400 players playing from 20 clubs in three divisions in the current season.

Matches are played on Thursdays and stats and results are sent out every Friday morning.

The league’s finals shootout will be played at 8’s Sports Bar, Main Road, Witfield on April 7 from 10am to 6pm, followed by the prize-giving.

The new ESP league season starts on May 10, and any clubs, teams or players interested in getting involved should contact Sacks on 082 257 0669 or email esp@creativestuff.co.za

There is also a blackball league – the alternative discipline in pool – currently being formed on the East Rand, with the prospect of kicking off by the end of March.

Any clubs, teams or players that are interested should contact Sacks.
