Paddling the waves at high altitude
The event, hosted by Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, is the world’s only high altitude surf ski championships.
The Gauteng Surf Ski Championships takes place annually at Emmarentia Dam, and a few participants from Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) took part this year.
The event, hosted by Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, is the world’s only high altitude surf ski championships, taking place at very high altitude hundreds of kilometres away from the coastline.
The race is a lot of fun, with a festive atmosphere and the participation of stand up paddlers (SUPs) included.
The official surf ski race was a 10km course, while the SUPs’ course was shorter and informal, with a number of six-man crews on the large blow-up SUPs just having some surfing fun.
With bagpipes playing along the banks, and ducks scuttling to get out of the way of the waves, as well as a few blow-up sharks planted around the dam, and a number of paddlers tipping over when hit by the side from waves, the day was full of laughter and fun.
VLC participants who enjoyed the fun, exciting challenge included Zach Zacharopoulos, who finished in 56 minutes as the fifth over-55 age group finisher.
Anton Nel finished in 55 minutes and Nick Bradley finished in 56 minutes and 16 seconds.
