Football Academy to open its doors in Germiston

Football Academy Plus will be opening its doors to the community, in hopes of nurturing new talent.

Lace up your football boots and get ready for an exciting new chapter of football in Germiston as Football Academy Plus (FA Plus) opens its doors, on March 5 at the Germiston City Sports Club.

FA Plus is a network of football academies with branches across South Africa, offering coaching and training for players aged from 10 to 19 years old.

The academy came from humble beginnings. It initially opened in Cape Town in 2012 with only one ball, a couple of cones and a park as a training facility.

Now it boasts branches not only in Cape Town but also in Pretoria, Polokwane, the Garden Route, Pietermaritzburg and Lesotho.

FA Plus selected Germiston as its next venue due to the untapped football talent in the community.

“I coached in Germiston a few years ago so I know we have lots of talent in the area,” said Geoff Cockrill on behalf of FA Plus.

The academy aims to nurture young footballers, develop their skills and help them to bridge the gap between playing amateur and professional football.

FA Plus has formed a partnership with Germiston City Football Club to share the grounds and looks forward to a mutually beneficial relationship that will see the academy acting as a feeder for the local club.

“The academy will be a good thing, especially for the young players from six to 10 years old,” said Peter Oliver, the chairperson of Germiston City FC.

“It will be able to teach them strong basics and offer them the opportunity to work with different coaches and play with different players as they get older.

“Overall I believe it will be a positive partnership in the long run and will be a great benefit to Germiston.”

The academy will officially kick things off on March 5 with a session of trials from 4pm to 6pm.

All players are welcome.
