Success for Eagles in local derby

The Elsburg Eagles soar to the top of the log in the Executive League and triumph in local derby.

The Elsburg Eagles Main Oval in Dinwiddie, which is home to the Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club, was vibrant with the thuds of bat on ball when the Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club hosted Germiston City Cricket Club in the Sunday Promotion League, last Sunday.

Germiston batted first and were bowled out for 75 runs in their 50 overs.

The Eagles’ Renier Wiesenar, with four wickets for 14 runs in seven overs, was the top bowler for the Eagles in the match with teammate JD Schultz with two wickets for 17 runs in four overs following close behind.

Renier Wiesenar of Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club is bowling and Donovan Smit of Germiston City Cricket Club is ready to complete a run in the Sunday Promotion League.

Elsburg Eagles came to bat after tea and made 79 runs with only one wicket down in 22 overs, giving them a nine-wicket victory.

Phillip Crouse was the top batsman overall with 35 runs not out, followed by fellow batsman Kobus Black with 22 runs not out.

“This is a great start to the second half of the season,” said Martiens Grobler of the Elsburg Eagles.

The Sunday Executive League held at the Elspark Sports Complex on Sunday, saw the Elsburg Eagles soar to the top of the log after defeating their opponents, Avion Cricket Club, with a two-wicket victory.

Avion batted first and set a target of 174 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs which the Elsburg Eagles surpassed by knocking 175 runs in 40 overs.

The top batsmen were Martiens Grobler with 46 runs, Johan van Greunen with 29 runs and Royan Jacobs with 28 runs not out.

In an away match against Kempton Park Cricket Club in the Saturday Second League, the Eagles lost to Kempton Park by 58 runs.

Kempton were first to take to the crease batting 171 runs with 10 wickets down, a target unmatched by the Elsburg Eagles as they only made 113 runs in their 35 overs for 10 wickets.

The top bowler and batsman for the Eagles was Willie Steyn with three wickets for 33 runs in six overs and he made 41 runs when he took to the crease to bat.
