Local paddlers tackle tough rapids

With the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon almost upon them, paddlers are training hard.

The Johannesburg Canoe Club hosted a two-day 60km Klip River training race, last weekend, to provide an opportunity for seeding and start batching for the upcoming FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon which takes place from February 15 to 17.

The Dusi takes place from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, and is known as the world’s toughest canoe endurance event.

The race, from Daleside on the Klip River towards the Vaal junction in Three Rivers, covered a distance of about 32km each day and included a number of portages.

A few paddlers from Victoria Lake Canoe Club kept each other company during the portage at the training race. Bobby Damalis (left) and Uwe Schmidthaus with their partners behind them.

The river level was high as a result of the frequent rainstorms throughout the south, east and west of Gauteng – where the water finds its way to the Klip River.

Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) members Bobby Damalis, who is a veteran endurance athlete with many years of experience, and Paul Nel, a relatively new paddler to the river who will enjoy his first Dusi event, tackled the race as a team.

The pair survived the huge rapids and the portage runs and finished the 64km event over the two days in a time of five hours and 30 minutes.
