The South African national team, with wrestlers from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Roodepoort, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and even Cape Town, trained together in Primrose this weekend in preparation for the African Continental Championships.

Three teams from South Africa will be competing in the championships, namely the cadet team, the junior team and the senior team.

National team members Fernando Booysen, who has been identified by the International Federation United World Wrestling as a hopeful for the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in August, and Matthew Bartlett, were absent from the training as they have been preparing for the championships in Germany since November last year.

They will join the team in Nigeria.

The championships comprise a total of 10 weight categories in each of the disciplines that will be wrestled. These include the men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling where all participants are in the senior age group.
