Difficult weekend for Eagles

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club suffered losses in their Easterns Cricket League matches this weekend.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club continued their Easterns Cricket League campaign, competing against Kempton Cricket Club in the Saturday Second League and the Sunday Executive League, this weekend.

“It was not a great weekend for Elsburg Eagles,” said Martiens Grobler on behalf of the club.

The Saturday Second League match saw the Eagles hosting Kempton Park at the Elsburg Eagles Main Oval in Dinwiddie.

Despite the early morning rain, which made the pitch sticky, the sun came out and the teams were able to take to the field on time.

Though the club gave it their all, they were defeated by the visitors.

Kempton batted first and set a target of 137 in their 35 overs for 10 wickets.

The day’s top bowlers were Zane Esterhuizen with five wickets for 16 runs in seven overs and Qamar Hayat with one wicket for 28 runs in seven overs.

The home team then had their time with the bat and could only knock up 113 runs in their 35 overs, all out.

This gave the Kempton Park a 24-run victory.

The Eagles top batsmen for the match were Garreth Hann with 32 runs and Billy Millar with 23 runs.

In the Sunday Executive League the Eagles travelled to Kempton Park for the match.

The home team took to the crease first and set an impressive target of 307 runs, with three wickets in hand, in their 50 allotted overs.

Though the visitors’ bowling was in top form, their fielding was not up to scratch.

“There was great bowling by the team but the fielding let the team down with more than 10 catches dropped,” explained Grobler.

The match’s top bowlers were Willie Steyn with two wickets for 41 runs in seven overs and Darren van Tonder with one wicket for 36 runs in seven overs.

The Eagles then took to the crease but were only able to knock up 201 runs in their 50 overs, giving the home team a 106-run victory.

This was Kempton Park’s second win of the weekend.

The match’s top batsmen were Phillip Crouse with 56 runs, Johan van Greunen with 37 runs and Willie Steyn with 27 runs.

The club will face Tembisa Cricket Club in the Saturday Second League at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, this Saturday, and on Sunday they will take on Avion Cricket Club in the Sunday Promotion League at the Elsburg Eagles Main Oval in Dinwiddie and Thokoza Cricket Club in the Sunday Executive League at the Elspark Sports Grounds.
