Local club bids 2017 farewell with special run

Local athletics club encourages runners heading into the new year.

Katlehong Athletics Club bid farewell to 2017 with a long slow distance 31km run.

The run, which was held last Sunday, saw over 350 runners from across the province tackling the route that started in Katlehong and passed Palm Ridge, Thokoza, Eden Park, Alrode and Brackendowns to the corner of Swaartkoppies and Kliprivier roads before they headed back to Katlehong.

This run was separated into three categories, namely top runners, moderate pace and slow runners.

The run was aimed at encouraging and assisting athletes and joggers to maintain their health and fitness goals heading into 2018, and popular runners Isaac Mabula, Sibusiso “Mnandi Bus” Mlangeni, Thabile “Comrades Mama” Mathe and Thulane “Tallguy” Mlangeni all joined in the run.

“The long slow distance runs offer runners joint and muscle endurance training which allows them to tackle more mileage,” said Lehlohonolo Motloung, chairperson of Katlehong Athletics Club.

“We were overwhelmed by the support received at our training run.

“Due to its popularity, we are now considering hosting the next run at the Huntersfield Stadium, in Katlehong, for the safety of our runners.

“We hope that we’ve really assisted runners and joggers in re-energising themselves and recharging their batteries going into 2018,” concluded Motloung.
