Difficult and wet weekend for Germiston cricketers

Wet weather affected Germiston City Cricket Club’s Easterns Cricket League campaign this weekend.

The wet and rainy weekend weather had a negative effect on the Germiston City Cricket Club’s Easterns Cricket League campaign, with three of their four matches being cancelled.

The club’s Saturday Second League match, Sunday Executive League match and Sunday President’s League were all called off due to the weather.

However, the club players were able to take to the field at the Germiston City Sports Club, for their Sunday Promotion League match against the Benoni Northerns Cricket Club.

The club won the toss and elected to field first, in the match which was delayed for an hour to allow the pitch to dry.

Benoni was able to knock up a total of 189 runs in their allotted 45 overs, reduced from 50 due to the delayed start.

Germiston’s top bowlers for the day were Anthony Streicher, with four wickets in nine overs for just 37 runs, and Jacques Nel, with three wickets in nine overs for 34 runs.

The club struggled at the crease and players were bowled out for a measly 99 runs, which meant a 90 run victory for Benoni.

“Hard work in this department is required to get the team back on track,” said club chairperson David Ungerer.

This weekend the club will face the United Cricket Club in the Promotion League in an away match and the Bakerton Youth Cricket Club in the Sunday President’s League in a home match.
