Mixed results for Germiston cricketers

Germiston City Cricket Club continued their Easterns Cricket League campaign with an Executive League win and a Promotion League loss.

It was not only a hot weekend in the city but also on the cricket pitch as Germiston City Cricket Club forged ahead with its Easterns Cricket League campaign.

In Sunday’s Executive League match the club faced current log leaders Thokoza Cricket Club in a must-win match on Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston’s pitch.

Germiston won the toss and elected to bat first.

Although the club was restricted to only 36 overs of batting, they knocked up a solid 184 runs all out.

Pieter de Bruyn showed the way in the batting department with a patient 49 not out, while Divan van Aswegen contributed a sturdy 22 runs.

The team then took to the field and managed to bowl the Thokoza team out for 134 runs in 20 overs, giving Germiston a vital 50-run win to bolster their league campaign.

The top bowler was Nicholas Tantum, whose accurate performance yielded five wickets for only 36 runs in eight overs.

Another win for Germiston

Meanwhile, in the Sunday Promotion League, Germiston faced arch-rivals Bedfordview at Germiston City Sports Club.

Germiston once again won the toss and elected to bat first.

However, it was not a good day for the club’s batsmen as they were bowled out for a lowly 102 runs in 38 overs.

Bedfordview then took to the crease and surpassed the target in 19.3 overs with seven wickets in hand.

“I am confident the team will bounce back, we just need to go back to drawing board in some departments and hit the rest button,” said club chairperson David Ungerer. “We have a young, skillful and talented side, and we will find our feet again.”

This week the club will face Midrand Cricket Club in the Promotion League, to be played at Germiston City Sports Club.
