Hard-hitting derby action

Germiston-based clubs the Bears Rugby League Club and the Mustangs Rugby League Club clashed in a home derby at the Germiston Stadium on Saturday.

Loud shouts of support filled the air at the Germiston Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as the Bears Rugby League Club and the Mustangs Rugby League Club tackled it out in a Germiston derby.

This was the first time the two teams had faced each other this season, and what a thrilling and exciting match it was, with the Bears winning 46-12.

The match saw big hits and great tries and both clubs enjoyed the physicality and fast pace of the match.

From the opening whistle each team gave their all and neither team wanted to give their opponents even an inch.

The Bears were the first to get some points on the board, with a well-worked try from the halfway line when full back Pieter Nguni broke free from the pack with some fancy footwork.

This seemed to give the team, who were down three men, the push they needed and they went on to dominate the first half, taking advantage of their opportunities with the ball and converting the possession into points despite a strong defence and hard tackles from the Mustangs.

“It was a great and tiring game.

“It was an impressive team effort and the players gave it their all and stood together despite being three men down,” said Bears club chairperson Andries van der Merwe.

“It was a very tough game and our players gave it their all, however, it was just not enough,” said Mustangs club chairperson Monique Nothnagel.

Tries for the Mustangs were scored by Damian Diedericks and Jacques du Toit.

The Bears’ 10 tries were scored by van der Merwe, Nguni, Johannes Venter, Jacques Carelse and Ronald Botes.

The Bears are now preparing for their most anticipated match of the year, against the South Central Rabbitohs, which will be played on Saturday in Centurion.

“We have eagerly awaited this match as the Bears and Rabbitohs make up the majority of the South African Rhinos Rugby League team,” said van der Merwe.
