Germiston come out on top despite rain

The Germiston City Cricket Club had a positive weekend winning two matches, while two more matches were called off due to rain.

It was another wet weekend in the city and although the rain may have brought a premature halt to two of Germiston City Cricket Club’s weekend matches, it didn’t dampen their spirits.

Of the four matches scheduled for the club, they walked away the victors in two, while the remainder were called off due to rain.

In the Promotion League match, played at the Germiston City Sports Club on Sunday, the club faced the Wattville Cricket Club.

Winning the toss, the team elected to bowl first and were able to hold the visitors to only 118 runs, all out, in just 30 overs.

The team’s top bowlers were Donovan Smit, with four wickets in six overs for just 18 runs and Shain Streicher who clinched three wickets in six overs for 22 runs.

Wicketkeeper Dumi Thantsha was commended on his skill behind the wicket, taking three catches in the match.

It was then Germiston’s turn to bat and the team seemed to have a hard time chasing down their target.

“We felt the team was in serious trouble at a stage with four wickets down and only 40 runs on the board,” said David Ungerer, club chairperson.

However, a solid performance by Anthony Streicher, with 46 runs, helped Germiston secure the win.

David Scott, with 20 runs and Smit, with 17 runs, allowed Germiston to win the match with six wickets in hand.

Germiston Cricket Club top the log

In the Executive League, played on Sunday, Germiston faced Bakerton YS Cricket Club.

The club once again won the toss, this time electing to bat first.

“Early gameplay was affected by the slightly wet pitch, due to the previous night’s heavy thunderstorm,” said Ungerer.

This lead both captains to agree to a delayed start and a reduced over match (40 from the allotted 50).

During their time at the crease, Germiston managed to knock up 236 runs in 33 overs before the rain came pelting down again.

The match’s top batsmen were Gareth van Grinkle, with 75 runs, Divan van Aswegen, with 45 runs and Frans Kuiper, with 24 runs.

Sadly the rain did not clear and the match was called off, meaning it was a draw.

In the Saturday Second League, Germiston travelled to Bakerton YS Cricket Club’s home grounds where they lost the toss and were sent in to bat first.

The team set an impressive target of 225 runs in their allotted 35 overs.

“A solid start-up partnership between Jacques Nel, with 43 runs, and Jan Aucamp, with 52 runs, set the scene for Anthony Streicher to knock up a good 69 not out,” said Ungerer.

Germiston then took to the field and won the match after a relentless bowling attack saw the home team all out for only 35 runs.

The club won the match by 191 runs, with Anton van der Linde, with five wickets in seven overs for 24 runs and Rudi le Roux, with two wickets in five overs for 14 runs, being named the match’s top bowlers.

The club’s President’s League match against Actonville Cricket Club was called off as the pitch was too wet. This means the teams draw.

This coming weekend the team will face Kempton Park Cricket Club in an away match in the Saturday Second League.

While on Sunday, the club will face Alberton Cricket Club in an away match in the Executive League, Boksburg Cricket Club in an away match in the Promotion League and Duduza Cricket Club in a home match at Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston in the President’s League.
