Germiston bat into a new season

The Germiston City Cricket Club kicked off their 2017/2018 Easterns Cricket League campaign this weekend.

With dark clouds looming overhead, the Germiston City Cricket Club kicked off their 2017/2018 Easterns Cricket League campaign, on Sunday.

The club, who will feature in several different leagues this year, competed in the Executive and President’s leagues on Sunday.

The Executive League side faced Kempton Park Cricket Club in a reduced over match, from 50 overs to 30 overs, at the Germiston City Sports Club.

Germiston won the toss and elected to bat first, making 167 runs off 24 overs with eight wickets in hand before rain brought an end to the match.

Batsmen Anthony Stryger, Alfred Hearnshaw and NicholasTantum scored 62, 42 and 34 respectively, for the side.

In the President’s League match, reduced from 40 overs to 35 overs, played at Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston, the club was sent in to bat first after losing the toss.

Germiston racked up 157 runs with one wicket in hand after their allotted 35 overs, with the day’s top batsmen being David Ungerer with 28 runs, Cameron Ungerer with 27 runs and Trestin Delange with 26 runs.

“During the interval, the rain came down and the match was abandoned,” said David Ungerer, the club chairman.

This weekend the club will compete in the Saturday Second League, on Saturday, against the Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club at the Germiston City Sports Club.

On Sunday the club will compete in the Promotion League against Springs Old Boys, in Springs, in the Executive League against Vosloorus Cricket Club at the Germiston City Sports Club and in the President’s League against Kempton Park Cricket Club, in Kempton.
