Athletes head for tough Laingsburg Karoo Ultra Marathon.

Germiston Callies Harriers will be represented by seven athletes at the annual Laingsburg Karoo Ultra Marathon to be held in Laingsburg, in the Western Cape, on Saturday.

Zwelithini Vaphi, Emmanuel Mavunda, Bheki Hlatshwayo, Watson Matlou; Mahlomola Mothibi, Siziwe Ntshebe and Rebecca Zandamela are the local athletes preparing for the 80km marathon.

The club sponsored the trip and committee member, Victor Mhlakaza, will drive down with the athletes and give them support on the tough route.

“This year will be my eighth time taking part in the marathon and throughout the years I have always been among the top six and won it once,” said Vaphi.

“I know it is a very tough race but I am sure our team will claim top 10 positions and maybe one of us will win the race.

“We are looking at the two women from the club to come out on top.”

Zandamela will be competing for the second time this year having finished third, last year.

“I think Zandamela can win it this year,” said Vaphi.
