Athletes deliver as promised

Thunder MMA’s two athletes proved that they are forces to be reckoned with when they won their bouts.

Thunder MMA athletes brought the thunder to the Extreme Warriors Championships (EWC) held at Wild Waters in Boksburg, last Saturday (GCN, September 8, “Athletes head for EWC”).

The club’s Emmanuel Edoan and Kobus Pelser won their bouts at the championship.

Edoan won via technical knockout (TKO) one minute and 36 seconds into the first round of his three-round bout.

“Edoan fought brilliantly; we had a game plan and he stuck to it,” said the club’s head coach, Pietie Coxen.

“He listened well and executed all he was trained on which led to the win.

“I liked the way he fought. It also showed that it is not all about strength but about technique as well.”

Edoan, who only started fighting this year, is thrilled with his win.

“It was a good fight and it feels amazing to have won it,” said Edoan.

“This is a new sport for me and I have been with the club for two months now but I have learned a lot already.

“Thank you to Coxen, his wife Judette and the club members for all their support.

“From here, it is TKO all the way.”

Pelser concluded matters early in his bout when he won the fight, via a rear-naked choke, 32 seconds into the first round.

Coxen said Pelser also stuck to the game plan and was tactful in his fighting.

“Pelser fought his own fight and not that of his opponent.

“I am proud of both these fighters. They fought well and their wins are well-deserved.

“This is mixed martial arts, you need to fight cleverly; a good fighter is a clever fighter,” said Coxen.

Coxen said Pelser is the number one contender in the 61kg division and is due to fight for the title in December.

Future plans for the club and its members include participation in the Gauteng Fighting Championship (GFC) by Edoan and Clinton and Taylor Louw.

The championship will be held on October 21 in Primrose and the Louw brothers will both make their debuts at the championship.

Logan van Heerden, Deacon Hall, Amber Simmons and Aby Brooks will face their opponents in light contact fights at the championships.

Other club members will take part in fun grappling sessions on the morning of the tournament.
