Germiston start SAB League on a win

Germiston City FC and FC Germiston have merged to take football to greater heights.

Germiston City Football Club saw the dawn of a new and exciting future for the club.

Germiston City FC and FC Germiston have merged to take on the name Germiston City Football Club in the SAFA Ekurhuleni SAB league.

It is seen as a benefit for both clubs as it has given FC Germiston a home of their own and Germiston City FC a higher league status and something for the developing players to set their sights and to attain a higher standard of football at the club.

Germiston City has produced players for years, only to lose them to clubs with higher statuses for no remuneration. The merger allows these players to “stay at home and aim higher”.

“Through this, we see a great future for football in Germiston,” said Peter Oliver, chairman of Germiston City FC.

“The club’s first SAB League fixture saw them taking on Shumba FC from Alexandra at home, last Saturday.

“The Germiston side started well with a goal from a corner taken short which Isaac Magagula dribbled past the full back and unleashed a into the right-hand corner of the net for Germiston to open the scoring in the 15th minute.”

Germiston continued to play good football forcing Shumba into making mistakes.

A free kick in the 37th minute led to the second Germiston goal after the Shumba keeper fisted the ball only as far as Sihle Mdatyulwa who netted it.

Half-time saw Germiston leading 2-0.

“The second half started with a rejuvenated Shumba who applied pressure on the Germiston side and kept them under pressure for 15 minutes. But a good run down the right flank by Teboho Muso, who squared the cross to a waiting Magagula, saw Magagula score his second and Germiston’s third goal,” said Oliver.

Germiston was thrilled with the 3-0 win in the first outing of the season.

A slight damper on the celebrations were the six yellow cards for Germiston and one for Shumba dished out during the match.

• Super League:

The Germiston City FC Super League team are coming to the end of their season and with some players moving up to the SAB League, the side went down 2-0 to Zwide FC from Katlehong, in an away match.

The local side missed two penalties and it was noted that the promoted players were sorely missed.

However, this gave coach Sreten Pavlovic a chance to try out some players from the u-17 side in the senior squad.

The Super League first team has three games left of their season.
