Simmer claims Bailey Cup a second time

The local side took the Bailey Cup title for the second consecutive year in what has been described as one of the best finals ever witnessed

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club’s first team dedicated its win in the Pirates Grand Challenge Bailey Cup final against Alberton to all current and former players who have worn the black jersey.

The local side took the Bailey Cup title for the second consecutive year in what has been described as one of the best finals ever witnessed as Simmer beat Alberton 52-10.

The previous games played between the two rival teams were close affairs, but this time was different.

The match, played at the University of Johannesburg on Saturday, saw the Germiston side giving Alberton a rugby lesson, with that final score.

Both Armand van der Veyver and scrumhalf, Darrio Bezuidenhout, each recorded two tries for Simmer.

Other try-scorers were Werner Thomas, Gerrie Gertzen, Quintin Morris and Chucky Moorecroft.

Bezuidenhout now has four tries in two finals for Simmer.

For Alberton, the up-and-coming Caltino Jones was successful with a penalty and a conversion, while Jonathan Reed scored a well-deserved try for Alberton.

Alberton battled to get over the gain line effectively, but when Simmer got the ball they made heavy inroads almost at will.

Simmer showed exceptional defence, with the opposition failing to gain any field.

The Germiston side also dominated in its semi-final against Diggers Rugby Club to reach Saturday’s final when the locals recorded another impressive win of 38-10.

In that match, Simmer, with a lighter pack of forwards, had a hard time in the scrums but dominated the line-outs.

The back line was just a class too good for Diggers. With the most ball possession, Simmer looked very good on attack.
