Luso Africa on top of their game

It was a great weekend for Luso Africa with good results.

Luso Africa FC had an extremely busy, good weekend.

The women started off the good run in their SAFA Ekurhuleni Women’s League top of the table clash against Phomolong Ladies FC, winning 2-1.

The first half saw the teams fairly evenly matched although Luso had the better chances to take the lead.

They, however, failed to take their chances and the game went into the break at 0-0.

Some good team play saw Sabrina Martins open the score and Luso take a well-deserved lead in the second half.

Phomolong fought back and got an equaliser with about 15 minutes left on the clock.

Luso refused to settle for a draw and a good corner from Chanel Fisher was converted by Mampa Tlhwaele to give Luso the win and opening up a gap at the top of the women’s league table.

The women take on Sharp Shooters FC at the Sinaba Stadium on Saturday.

The men continued Luso’s successful weekend when the super league teams returned to Old Bens, this week in the league.

The second team looked to make amends after last week’s defeat and started the game very well.

They had too much quality for the Old Bens team and it was Brent Vos who opened the scoring early in the first half.

An off the ball altercation saw one of the Luso players get a red card halfway through the first half but Luso, however, regrouped and looked as if they were the team with an extra player.

Brent Vos got a much deserved second goal before the break.

The second half saw the same from Luso – a strong dominant display despite being a man down.

The game looked to be under control until the last few minutes where the Luso defence made two mistakes and were punished for both.

The game ended 2-2 and Luso were left frustrated after working so hard for much of the game.

The first team knew they were in for a tough afternoon with several players missing from last week’s cup win against Old Bens.

The Old Bens team came out hard but the Luso team were well prepared for what Old Bens had to throw at them.

They arrived with a game plan and stuck to it and Old Bens could not find a way to break through a disciplined performance from Luso.

With the pressure well contended with, Luso eased into the game and started creating chances.

A good break down the left by Jonathan Spiers saw Luso taking the lead.

Luso took a well-deserved lead into the break.

The second half saw the same discipline from the Luso defensive unit and Old Bens simply had no way to break them down.

The Luso team was playing with confidence and willing to fight to win any scrappy battles and this was just too much for Old Bens.

Three points was the most important thing and that is what they got.

Two good wins against a good Old Bens team in two weeks leaves the Luso team going back home a very happy team.

The players in the SAB League also did not disappoint.

In a must-win game for Luso as they keep pushing to remain title contenders, the team got off to a positive start as they pressed for an early goal.

Good defending and poor finishing saw the scores remain 0-0 until the 25th minute when a great corner by Donovan Thompson was met at the front post by Sean Strunkheide to put Luso 1-0 against seventh placed Germiston City FC on a cold afternoon in Delville.

The Luso defence was not called upon often as Germiston failed to threaten and it looked as though Luso would increase the lead at any stage.

Early in the second half saw a game changing moment when a beautifully flighted free kick from Marcio Concalves had the ’keeper in two minds.

His hesitancy gave Luso a chance to get a shot away which was blocked by the hand of a Germiston player and a penalty was duly awarded.

Germiston players protested and one of their players was given a red card.

Strunkheide stepped up to score his and Luso’s second goal, giving Luso a 2-0 victory.

In the end a comfortable three points for the team from Primrose.

The SAB team will be taking on Valentino FC on Friday night at home.

The third team played a cup game against World Net and walked away with a comfortable 9-0 win.

The u-20 team beat Benoni Spurs 3-0.

The u-7, u-8, u-11 and u-12 teams also all won.
