Boxers conquer championships

Primrose Open Boxing Academy members continue to strive for success.

New Primrose Open Boxing Academy member, Olwethu Lamula (8), used her debut fight to showcase her skills and talents.

Lamula competed at the Ekurhuleni School Boys and Girls Boxing Championships held at the Boksburg Boxing Club, last Saturday.

“She is new to the club but it didn’t take long to see that she is talented,” said the club’s chairman and head coach, Louwrens Ellis.

“Seeing her passion, determination and talent I decided to enter her in the championships.

“It was her first tournament and she didn’t disappoint.”

Lamula competed in the 28kg division against an opponent from Boksburg and she won the bout.

“I enjoyed the fight; it was a good fight,” said Lamula.

Lamula was not the only club member participating.

Her club mate, Nikita Filbin (14), also took part in the championships and won when her opponent withdrew.

“Filbin entered in the 52kg division but just before the fight her opponent withdrew from the bout because she felt she wasn’t ready,” said Ellis.

“Filbin’s opponent said she hadn’t recovered from an injury she got while playing hockey.

“Due to the withdrawal, Filbin was then announced the winner and champion.”

Ellis also said Filbin is set to compete at the Gauteng Boxing Championships later in the year.

“Filbin was selected into the Ekurhuleni team which will represent the metro at the Gauteng Boxing Championships in October,” he said.

“We are only hoping for the best going forward; we will continue with training and improve where necessary.”
