Unfortunate loss for Germiston

Germiston City Football Club’s first team went head-to-head against Boksburg Football Club’s first team.

Germiston City Football Club’s first team went up against Boksburg Football Club at the Germiston City Sports Club on Saturday.

The Germiston side played without coach Sreten Pavlovic, who is away on a CAF (Confederation of African Football) coaches’ course.

The local side was also without key players Tshepo Moketsi and Comfort Malebelo, who were injured, and Digledi Kigare, who was away.

“Germiston gave 16-year-old d’Angelo Kaseem a first team chance at the left back position and the youngster seemed quite capable of holding himself in the game,” said Germiston City FC’s Peter Oliver.

“Germiston started the match well with Tunde Rufai and Thembkosi Mhlongo testing the Boksburg goalkeeper early on in the game.”

Oliver also said Mhlongo hit the crossbar with a ferocious free kick which fell gratefully to a Boksburg defender who cleared the lines.

Boksburg broke down Germiston’s defence and scored the game’s first goal.

“In the second half, Germiston looked tired and disinterested, which was a recipe for disaster,” said Oliver.

“Germiston soon found themselves two goals down and this sparked action in the home team. A foul in the Boksburg penalty area allowed Germiston’s Scotty Chando to score.”

Germiston carried on the pressure but a mistake by young Kaseem saw Boksburg awarded a penalty which they used effectively to extend their lead.

The local team continued to take their chances but none were a success.

“With the side applying pressure, it left them exposed at the back and allowed Boksburg to score a fourth goal minutes before the full-time whistle,” said Oliver.

Germiston’s first team lost 4-1 to Boksburg.

Other results:

  • Germiston’s reserve side beat Boksburg reserves 1-0.
  • Germiston’s third side lost 1-3 to Boksburg.
