Germiston Callies head to the Comrades

The Germiston Callies Harriers host their annual Comrades Breakfast at the Victoria Lake Club.

The Germiston Callies Harriers athletics club celebrated their runners who will take on the Comrades Marathon, this coming Sunday, with a special breakfast.

The breakfast, on Sunday, was held at the Victoria Lake Club after members took part in an early morning run.

During the breakfast, special shirts, sponsored by Ackermans Pharmacy, were handed over to the club’s 68 runners who are ready to tackle one of South Africa’s toughest marathons.

This year, the club is proud to be represented by 12 novices, seven of whom are women.

Janos Herceg, Nothe Mofokeng and Siziwe Ntshebewill are competing in their 10th Comrades, while Patrick Tlhalogang will be taking part in his double green race (20th race).

Veteran runners Terry O’connor, Fred Macdougall and Alan Robb, former Comrades winner, will be competing in their 29th, 28th and 43rd races, respectively, while Zwelithini Vaphi, Andries Ngwenya, Emmanuel Mavunda, Bheki Hlatshwayo and Sipho Dlamini are tipped to produce the club’s top results.

Russel Crawford, a former Callies member and Comrades runner, was one of the guest speakers who joined the breakfast to offer runners some words of encouragement, as well as words of wisdom for the novices.

The club has been helping its runners prepare for the race, which will see competitors running from the Durban City Hall and finishing at Scottsville Racecourse, in Pietermaritzburg, through a number of races in and around Germiston, including a 65km race, held at the end of April.

The runners, who are eager to get their running shoes on the road, will head for Durban on Friday for the final preparations.
