Difficult match for Germiston Simmer

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club played their first home match in the Golden Lions Rugby Union Pirates Grand Challenge.

The rain did not keep supporters away or dampen players’ spirits as Germiston Simmer Rugby Club tackled it out against Alberton Rugby Club on Saturday.

The match played at the Germiston Stadium was the club’s first home match in the Golden Lions Rugby Union Pirates Grand Challenge.

The first teams were in action on the main field, and the wet weather meant there were a lot of handling errors from the get-go.

The game started with a loose pass from inside centre Anton Coetzee in front of Simmer’s poles landing in the hands of an Alberton player outside centre, who had an easy run in for seven points.

This was soon neutralised as Coetzee made up for his error by scoring a try of his own.

This was followed by a run in from wing, Armand van Dyk, to make the score 10-7 in favour of Simmer.

Just before half-time an on-field incident saw two Simmer players and one Alberton player receive yellow cards.

This, however, did not deter the home team and they managed to score yet another try as the half-time whistle blew, taking the score to a respectable 17-7.

Alberton would not be contained and came back with two tries in the opening minutes of the second half, leaving the score tied.

Simmer’s Eric de Beer clinched the win for the home team with a dash down the line for a well-earned try and a 22-18 home win for Simmer.

The man of the match award went to Morne van der Vyver for his outstanding performance.

The club will next face Soweto/Jabulani in an away match on Saturday.

Other results:

  • Simmer’s second team’s match was littered with backline mistakes and this created much more space for the dangerous Alberton backline.

The Simmer boys battled to maintain the assault and Alberton ran away with the game, beating Simmer 49-12.

  • The third team lost their match 22-19 after the Simmer pack created dominance upfront but the backline found it difficult to control the wet ball.

It was a very equally matched game that unfortunately went in the favour of Alberton.

  • Simmer’s u-21 team’s match saw the team defeated 21–0 by their Alberton counterparts.
