Bitter cold doesn’t dampen Germiston’s spirits

Germiston City Football Club took on Zwide Football Club, from Katlehong, during their ELFA Super League fixture this weekend.

It was a bitterly cold, rain-soaked Saturday afternoon, at the Germiston City Sports Club, when Germiston City Football Club took on Zwide FC of Katlehong.

The teams met in the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League fixture with Zwide looking the stronger side, as the home side’s team was depleted through suspension, injury and no-shows, forcing coach Sreten Pavlovic to promote a number of reserve players to the first team.

But this didn’t stop the club from giving their all.

An outstanding game by Germiston goalkeeper Mkhwanaazi Mthandeni kept Germiston in the game through a string of excellent saves.

Through his outstanding efforts, Germiston were able to keep the scores level, at 0-0, until half-time.

The near-misses at goal in the first half were forgotten as Germiston came out of the change rooms re-energised and ready to fight for a win.

Germiston’s Thabang Mohaeka, bumped up from the reserve team, was able to latch onto a through ball in the 60th minute, scoring the first goal of the match and putting Germiston ahead 1-0.

Germiston continued to play well in the last 30 minutes of the game, holding Zwide attack at arm’s length.

However, with 10 minutes to go, Zwide was able to break through the determined Germiston defence and inched the ball past Mthandeni, levelling the score.

Germiston held strong for the remainder of the match and came away with a credible draw.

The club will next face Kempton Park Football Club in an away game on Saturday.
