Questionable fixture for Germiston

Germiston City Football Club took on Randburg Football Club during their ELFA Super League fixture.

Germiston City Football Club was up against top of the league Randburg Football Club, at the Germiston City Sports Club, on Saturday.

Germiston could have taken an early lead with a good run by Themba Molongo, but he hit his shot over the bar.

With three minutes to go in the first half, the ball was half cleared by the Germiston defence which allowed Randburg to score their first goal.

Although Germiston started well and kept the aggressive Randburg at bay for most of the time, emotions and eyebrows were raised when Germiston’s coach, Sreten Pavlovic, was sent off the field by the referee.

The half-time score was 0-1.

The second half was barely underway when the referee saw fit to penalise Germiston in their own area for Randburg to score the penalty.

“Germiston continued to play some good football, but with no help from the officials who tended to favour Randburg,” said Germiston’s Peter Oliver.

“The referee sent off Alex Njosa and for what the Germiston bench are still baffled about.”

Another mysterious moment was when a Randburg player deliberately pushed a Germiston player but the referee seemed to only blow the whistle when supporters made noise about it.

Germiston never gave up and a good ball pass by Tendai Rufai found Chad Nell who scored for the local side with seven minutes to go.

“However, the referee allowed Randburg to kick-off and promptly blew the whistle for full time, leaving a very disgruntled Germiston team who gave a never-say-die attitude,” said Oliver.

The local team’s coach was unhappy with the fixture.

“I am happy with the way the boys played but I am rather disappointed with the referee,” said Pavlovic.

“I don’t have anything against Randburg but I feel the referee spoiled the game.”

GCN couldn’t get comment from the referee before going to press.

Other results:

  • Germiston’s reserves were beaten 0-5 by Randburg.
  • The third side beat Bonaero Park 6-2.
