Bitter defeat for Germiston

Germiston City Football Club travelled to Benoni to face the Old Benonians Football Club in the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League, this weekend.

Germiston City Football Club suffered another blow on Saturday when they were defeated 6-2 in their Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League fixture against Old Benonians Football Club.

The club travelled to Old Bens home grounds for the match and got the match off to a good start with a well-timed cross by Tenda Rufai and goal by Mdu Mqwanzi, giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead.

Germiston continued their strong attack for the next 20 minutes, however, a number of dubious calls from the referee and a lack of concentration cost Germiston the game.

The first blow came when a ball played into the Germiston penalty area struck a defender on the arm resulting in the referee awarding a penalty against Germiston which was quickly converted by Old Bens.

“If the penalty was suspicious, Old Bens second goal was daylight robbery.

“A through ball by Old Bens to a player standing five metres off-side was not called by the referee’s assistant and play was allowed to continue allowing the home side to take the lead,” said Peter Oliver, on behalf of the Germiston City Football Club.

The home team scored their third goal of the match only a few minutes later pushing their lead to 3-1.

A good ball by Germiston’s Dembi Mayimela, however, found the head of Rufai for Germiston’s second goal of the match, moments before the half-time whistle sounded.

This important goal gave the club hope as they headed into the change rooms.

Sadly, it was not to be as Old Bens returned to the field ready to claim a home victory.

A ball pushed through the middle, early in the second half, was able to beat the Germiston defence and the forward struck the ball which hit the cross bar.

“While the Germiston players carried on playing, the referee’s assistant deemed the ball to have crossed the line, awarding another goal to Old Bens,” said Oliver.

Germiston could not recover from this blow and lost the match 6-2, with two more goals from the home side.

The club’s reserve side’s Saturday match ended on a much better footing, with the side claiming their first win of the season against their Old Bens counterparts.

The side fought hard for a 3-2 win.

Germiston’s next match will see them host Sporting Football Club, in a home match, at the Germiston City Sports Club grounds, on Saturday, April 30.
