Eagles celebrate successful season

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club celebrated a successful end to their Easterns Cricket League season.

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club celebrated a successful end to their Presidents League campaign this weekend.

The club faced Alberton Cricket Club in their final match of the season on Sunday at Willowmoore Park, in Benoni.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Eagles posted an impressive score of 259, all out, in their 40 allotted overs.

The club’s top batsmen for the day were Frans Louw, with 68 runs, Grant Wilcox, with 47 runs, Cristopher Coetzer, with 28 runs and Johan van Greunen, with 20 runs.

It was then Alberton’s turn at the crease.

Thanks to an excellent fielding performance by the Eagles, Alberton was only able to make 107 runs, all out, in their 40 overs, giving the Eagles a 152 run victory.

The top bowlers on the day were Darren van Tonder, with four wickets for 17 runs in seven overs, Dewald Coetzer, with two wickets for 14 runs in five overs and Gerhard Herbst with two wickets for 26 runs in five overs.

The team was thrilled with the results, as the victory meant that the team topped the Presidents League log.

“This was one of the best seasons for the club and the first time the club has competed in the Easterns Cricket League,” Martiens Grobler said on behalf of the club.

The club also placed joint third, with the Etwatwa and Boksburg cricket clubs, in the Promotion League, and third in the Easterns Cricket League’s Saturday Second League.

The club is now looking forward to the new season. Practice for the new season starts on Tuesday, September 5, with registration for new and old players already open.

“In the off-season we will be getting the players together for some friendly games to keep in practice and welcome new players to the club,” Grobler said.
