Tebbutt’s kick-starts the year

The students of Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy have started the year on a high note with two successful tournaments.

Members of the Lambton-based Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy kick-started the year on a high note, with outstanding performances at two local tournaments, recently.

The club’s first tournament of the year was the Eastern Gauteng Trials tournament, held in Brakpan.

Thirteen of kanchu Alex Tebbutt’s students participated in the event in a number of different disciplines, including kata, weapons, full-contact fighting and self-defence.

“I am very pleased with how the tournament turned out, as all 13 competitors earned their Eastern Gauteng colours,” said Tebbutt, who was recently named as trainer of the year for 2016.

“It was a positive start to the year for us.”

The next tournament on the club’s calendar was the World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) tournament, which was held in Kempton Park.

Several Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy members, including some beginners (white and yellow belts) took part in the World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) tournament in Kempton Park recently, racking up 33 medals in total.

Competitors once again competed in several different disciplines, winning 12 gold medals, 16 silver medals and five bronze medals.

“I couldn’t be happier with the results of the tournament,” said Tebbutt.

Luan van Coller (4) was one of the young members of Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy who competed in the World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) tournament held in Kempton Park recently.

Students will now turn their attention to the club’s in-house grading, for white to brown belts, which will be held at the dojo in Lambton on March 25.

Thereafter, members will travel to Durban to take part in the South African Championships.

In addition to their training the club still finds time to help those in need.

“We have a community project where we as a club collect old clothes, toys, food and toiletries for Lorie House in Bronkhorstspruit.

“Later in the year we want to arrange to visit the home to spend the day with the children and just have some fun,” said Tebbutt.
