Keep safe getting fit

While out training on the roads make sure you put your safety first.

Safety should be part of any training plan for big events like the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Two Oceans Marathon or any of the parkrun events happening across the country.

“Our roads are very busy this time of year, with cyclists and runners making use of the favourable weather conditions to get into shape.

“My wish is that every single person is able to enjoy their workout in safety,” said Theunis Kotze, general manager ADT inland region.

A very good place to start with one’s safety routine, he said, is by making sure another person is aware of the route you will be taking and your expected time of return.

In this way, they can quickly raise the alarm in case something goes wrong.

“Visibility is another very important aspect.

“Wearing reflective clothing ensures you are visible to other road users,” said Kotze.

There is safety in numbers.

Kotze recommends strongly against running or cycling alone. Rather, he says, join a group of people who can look out for your safety and also offer encouragement along the way when the muscles get too sore.

Follow these safety tips:

Lock all the doors and gates, so that your loved ones can be safe while they wait for your return.

“Cycling groups such as the Pedal Power Association have put together very important safe cycling tips. “Take a look at their website www.pedalpower.org.za for advice,” said Kotze.
