Masters keep fit

Veteran footballers took to the field to showcase their skills.

The Primrose Sports Complex hosted the Caltex V&A Top Four Tournament on Saturday.

The tournament, now in its second year, involves four teams playing against each other for the ultimate first place prize.

Caltex V&A Homestead was this year’s sponsor for the tournament, that attracted a huge audience to the sports complex.

The teams who took part in the tournament are Primrose Masters, Delmore Masters, from Boksburg, Limpopo Masters, from Tembisa, and Piana Piana Masters, from Krugersdorp.

Primrose Masters were naturally the hosts.

“This is an annual event and it has grown since last year,” said Primrose Masters’ event organiser Sello Matseletsele.

“The aim of the event is to keep us masters fit and healthy, especially through something we love.

“You often find that we are consumed by our daily routines and don’t have time to exercise.”

In the first round, Primrose played against Delmore and won 3-2 progressing to the final round.

Piana Piana beat Limpopo 5-2 to face Primrose in the final round.

The final fixture was a tightly contested one as it ended in a 1-1 draw.

Due to it being a one-day tournament and a winner needing to be crowned, 20 minutes extra game time ensued but at the end of it all, the scoreboard remained the same.

Penalties concluded matters as Piana Piana beat Primrose 5-3.

Matseletsele said that they will continue with practice and playing the sport they love.

“The tournament went well and congratulations to the winning team and all the teams who took part,” he said.

“We all have a common interest and that is football; we will continue playing it.

“Primrose Masters has practice every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, at the Primrose Sports Complex.

“Interested teams or individuals, who are 35 years or older, are welcome to join.

“Thank you to our sponsors, Caltex V&A Homestead and H20 Car Wash.”

Matseletsele added that H20 Car Wash will, as of Saturday, sponsor them with transport and soccer kits, among other things.

The event organiser also said they are looking for teams who are willing to play friendly games against them.
