Athletes put to the test

Track and field is back on track.

The Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA)’s track and field season is well underway and receiving great participation from athletes and coaches.

Germiston Stadium hosted the second meeting on Saturday.

The event saw athletes of all ages participate and compete to secure podium positions and improve on their personal best times.

Germiston athletes were joined by other athletes from different parts of the country to showcase their talents.

Germiston Callies’ Kayla Gilbert, Lemuel Klaasen, Simone van der Nest and Verusca Woest were among the local athletes witnessed in action.

Local youngsters’ results:

  • Klaasen won the 100m youth boys’ sprint heat.
  • Van der Nest won the girls’ 100m u-19 sprint.
  • Woest won both the girls’ u-17 100m and 200m sprint heat.

“Unfortunately, Gilbert was injured during her 100m hurdles race and, therefore, didn’t make a podium position,” said the local athletes’ coach, Stephanè Kotzè.

“She was meant to do both the senior women’s 100m hurdles and long jump but the injury cut the race short.

“The injury isn’t a major one but we want her to give it time to heal properly.

“We are looking at focussing on her taking part in the long jump events for the rest of the year, but we will see how everything goes.”

Kotzè also added that his athletes will compete again in February and that he is happy with their current performances.

“I am very pleased with the way the athletes are performing, it seems this will be a very good season for us,” he said.

“There is no meeting this coming week but we are training for the next meeting expected to take place in February.”

Athletes will be working towards being selected to represent their province and country at national and international championships, such as the 2017 World Championships that will be held in London later this year.
